When you bring home a skein of hand-dyed organic cotton yarn, you're holding something made with real intention — small-batch dyed, individually wound, and crafted to last. A little care goes a long way in keeping the color vibrant and the fiber feeling its best.
Washing Your Yarn & Finished Projects
Hand-dyed yarns call for a gentle touch. Always hand wash in cool water with a mild detergent, then lay flat to dry. Avoid wringing or twisting, which can stress the fiber and distort your finished piece.
Keep finished projects out of direct sunlight for extended periods — UV exposure can gradually fade even the most carefully set dyes over time.
Color Transfer in the First Wash
Don't be alarmed if you notice some color in the rinse water during that first wash — this is completely normal with hand-dyed yarns. Fiber-reactive dyes bond deeply with the cotton, but a small amount of excess dye can release in the initial wash.
A simple tip: wash like colors together for that first rinse. Deep jewel tones with darks, lighter pastels separately. After the first wash, color transfer is minimal.
Understanding Batch Variation
Each skein is dyed by hand, in small batches. While consistency is always the goal, the handmade process means subtle shifts in tone can occur from batch to batch — a slightly warmer or cooler version of the same colorway, a touch more depth or brightness.
These variations aren't flaws. They're the fingerprint of handmade work. For larger projects like blankets or garments, we recommend purchasing all the yarn you need at once to keep tonal shifts to a minimum within a single project.
Choosing Between DK and Worsted Weight
All yarn comes in 50g cakes in two weights, each with a different feel and best use:
- DK Weight — A lighter, smoother fabric. Great for warmer-weather garments, baby items, fine shawls, and projects where you want stitch definition without bulk.
- Worsted Weight — Slightly thicker and faster to work up. Ideal for cozy home goods, hats, cowls, and projects where you want a bit more body and drape.
Both weights are 100% organic cotton, so they'll soften beautifully with washing and wear.
